Jamie Donley was among the young Spurs players handed a real chance to shine during pre-season, giving Roberto De Zerbi the opportunity to run the rule over him in person. The 21-year-old is said to have caught the Italian’s eye with his displays over the summer.
The midfielder already has four senior Tottenham appearances to his name, all picked up during the 2023/24 season under Ange Postecoglou. He’s also no stranger to loan football, having had three previous EFL spells away from Hotspur Way, most recently at Oxford United in the second half of last season.
Donley Confirmed On Season-Long Loan To Luton Town
Spurs have now confirmed that Donley is heading out on loan once again, this time joining Luton Town for the full campaign. Luton’s trajectory has nosedived since their Premier League days not long ago — successive relegations have left them competing in League One this season.
While Donley’s most recent season was spent in the Championship across spells at Stoke City and Oxford United, dropping down to the third tier isn’t new territory for him. He previously shone on loan at Leyton Orient during 2024/25.
Why League One For Donley?
Given how highly he’s rated internally, some fans might have expected another Championship switch for the midfielder. But neither his time at Stoke nor his stint at Oxford brought the consistent game time or breakthrough many were hoping for.
By contrast, Donley thrived at League One level with Leyton Orient, contributing eight goals and 10 assists across that campaign. Sending him back down appears to be a deliberate call from Tottenham — prioritising regular football to rebuild his form and confidence, with the aim of having him return ready to push for a spot in De Zerbi’s squad.
