James Maddison scored a stunning goal as Tottenham picked up their first Premier League win of the season, and he said afterwards that the hard times during his long injury layoff had been worth it.
The midfielder netted a superb opener in his first start in 18 months, an emotional return that helped Spurs move off the bottom of the table. It was also a night to remember for Dejan Kulusevski, who came off the bench to a huge ovation from the crowd, his first appearance for the club since May 2025.
Maddison admitted there were some dark days during his rehabilitation, though he didn’t want to go into too much detail. He explained that he had always dreamed of moments like this, and that scoring a goal like that was the light at the end of the tunnel. He also said he felt emotional watching Kulusevski return, since he knew exactly what it was like to come back after so long out.
He revealed that he had talked with the manager during the week about whether it was the right time to start, given a stop-start opening to the campaign. His aim, he said, was to play well, show his qualities and remind everyone what the team had been missing for the past 18 months. The manager was keen to pick him, and Maddison hoped he had given the boss something to enjoy.
Kulusevski, speaking to Sky Sports, said the fans’ reaction made the long road back worthwhile and that he had never given up on reaching this moment.
Coventry boss Frank Lampard, meanwhile, was pleased with his side’s performance despite the defeat. He credited Tottenham with two outstanding goals but questioned the second, suggesting an arm was raised towards a player’s face in the build-up, though he conceded it was still a quality finish.
Lampard felt 3-1 was harsh on his players, especially as the third goal arrived late on. He said his team created good chances and wanted a strong start, noting that Tottenham usually begin home games well without always getting the results their play deserved.
For Spurs, the win meant more than three points. Maddison’s spectacular return and Kulusevski’s comeback gave the club a big emotional lift and fresh hope that both players can help turn the season around.
