Inter are said to be edging closer to a deal for Tottenham goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario, though two key obstacles remain before any move to San Siro can be finalised.
Reports from Italy indicate that Inter have already reached a general agreement with Vicario over personal terms as they plan for a future without Yann Sommer, whose contract is set to expire in June. The Swiss veteran is expected to depart, pushing the club to accelerate their search for a long-term successor.
According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, talks between Inter and Vicario’s camp have gone well, with both sides broadly aligned on contract length and salary, even if the finer details have yet to be confirmed.
However, Inter still need to strike an agreement with Tottenham over a transfer fee before completing the deal. The 29-year-old has reportedly been valued between €15m and €20m, though Spurs’ position could change if they suffer relegation, with the club currently in the bottom three and just two points adrift of safety with four games left.
Another factor complicating matters is the situation of backup goalkeeper Josep Martinez. The Spaniard has spent the past two seasons understudying Sommer but has impressed when given opportunities. Despite Inter acknowledging his ability and long-term promise, the 27-year-old is keen to secure regular first-team football next season, whether at Inter or elsewhere.
Inter must now decide whether to proceed with signing Vicario at the risk of losing Martinez, or instead trust the Spaniard to step up as their first-choice goalkeeper.
