Former Southampton striker Charlie Austin has come out in support of James Maddison following the disputed penalty decision that overshadowed Tottenham’s 1-1 draw with Leeds United.
The incident has ignited fierce debate among Spurs fans, many of whom believe their side were clearly denied a spot-kick at a pivotal point in the match. Maddison, speaking after the game, made no secret of his frustration with the officiating and the role VAR played in the decision.
Appearing on Sky Sports, Austin said he sympathised entirely with the midfielder’s reaction and took aim at what he sees as a wider problem in the modern game — referees becoming too reliant on technology rather than trusting their own judgment in the moment.
Austin pointed out that Maddison has spent much of the season on the sidelines through injury and, like supporters watching from home, has grown increasingly exasperated with what he perceives as a lack of conviction from officials. Having returned and found himself immediately at the centre of such a contentious call, Austin felt his frustration was completely understandable.
The former striker’s verdict was straightforward: referees need to show more courage, make decisions with confidence, and not use VAR as a safety net — which he identified as the root cause of much of the current discontent around officiating.
His remarks have only added to the mounting pressure on the officials involved, with Tottenham supporters still questioning why the referee did not point to the spot without hesitation given the significance of the moment.
