Newcastle United are preparing to lodge a revised offer for Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Lucas Bergvall as they look to strengthen their midfield ranks ahead of the coming season.
The Swedish youngster’s future in North London has become a growing talking point. Once regarded as one of Spurs’ most promising young players, Bergvall’s position within the squad appears to have altered since Roberto De Zerbi took charge.
Towards the end of last season, the 20-year-old struggled for regular involvement, missing out on a starting berth in each of Tottenham’s final six league fixtures. That decline in playing time has led to questions over where he stands in De Zerbi’s plans going forward.
Bergvall Receptive to a Move
Football Insider’s Pete O’Rourke reports that the midfielder’s position has not changed — he remains open to leaving Tottenham should a suitable offer materialize. While De Zerbi has continued to include him in pre-season plans and has not ruled out keeping him at the club, that could change quickly if Newcastle return with a more attractive proposal.
The young midfielder is understood to want more consistent playing time, and a switch elsewhere in the Premier League could provide exactly that. Given his considerable ability, Bergvall is still regarded as a player with the potential to develop into a top-level performer.
Newcastle’s Interest Explained
The Magpies’ pursuit stems from a need to reshape their midfield following the summer departures of Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimarães. Eddie Howe’s side are said to be seeking a player with energy and versatility in central areas — attributes that closely match Bergvall’s profile, given his technical quality, work rate, and tactical adaptability.
Newcastle also see an advantage in the fact that Bergvall is already accustomed to English football, having settled into the pace and physicality of the Premier League. That familiarity could make for a smoother transition should he move north.
Should Newcastle view him as a genuine long-term addition rather than merely a replacement for their departed midfielders, Bergvall could become a key figure in their squad rebuild.
Newcastle Set to Increase Their Offer
An initial approach from Newcastle was previously rejected by Tottenham, but the Magpies are expected to come back with an improved bid.
Tottenham, though, remain in a position of strength. Bergvall’s contract runs until 2031, giving the club significant leverage and no pressing need to sell. As a result, Spurs are expected to hold out for a substantial fee, with reports suggesting an offer in excess of £50 million would be needed to open negotiations.
That valuation could prove to be the key obstacle. Newcastle will need to determine whether Bergvall is worth that level of investment, while Tottenham must weigh the benefits of a lucrative sale against losing one of their most highly rated young players.
For now, Bergvall’s future remains undecided. De Zerbi could still choose to give him a more prominent role, but a significantly improved offer from Newcastle — paired with the promise of regular football — would complicate that picture considerably.
The coming days could prove decisive, with Newcastle intent on reinforcing their midfield and Tottenham facing an important decision over their young Swedish talent.
