Liverpool have officially secured the signing of highly-rated Colombian youngster Samuel Martinez, beating competition from several European clubs to land one of South America’s promising teenage talents.
The 17-year-old attacking midfielder has agreed a long-term deal with the Reds, although fans will have to wait before seeing him at Anfield. FIFA regulations prevent international transfers involving players under 18, meaning Martinez will remain with Atlético Nacional until next summer, when he becomes eligible to make the move.
Liverpool are reportedly paying around £750,000 for the youngster. Martinez has already completed his medical and signed a five-year contract, which will officially come into effect once he turns 18.
The Colombian prospect has rapidly gained recognition as one of his country’s brightest young players. Having developed through Atlético Nacional’s academy, Martinez progressed into the senior setup and recently played a key role in Colombia’s South American U-17 Championship triumph.
