Slot acknowledges concern as Liverpool await Szoboszlai injury update

Liverpool’s 2-0 win over Brighton at Anfield brought crucial points and fresh momentum, but focus has quickly turned to Dominik Szoboszlai’s fitness after his late exit raised concerns.

Speaking after the match on Liverpoolfc.com, Arne Slot addressed the injuries sustained by both Joe Gomez and the Hungarian midfielder during the victory.

Slot confirmed Szoboszlai’s problem was related to his ankle and admitted the early signs were worrying.

“It was Dom’s ankle,” the Dutch coach said. “From what I saw, it didn’t look good.”

However, Slot pointed to Szoboszlai’s resilience as a source of hope.

“He has an unbelievable mentality, so we can only hope for the best,” he added.

Once again, Szoboszlai played a key role, even filling in at right-back after Gomez was forced off inside the opening 25 minutes, further highlighting his importance and versatility. That adaptability echoed Chris Sutton’s assessment, with the pundit describing it as “another really big game for Liverpool.”

Slot was more pessimistic about Gomez’s situation, suggesting the defender is unlikely to be available for next week’s trip to Tottenham.

“When a player comes off with a muscle injury like Joe, that’s usually not a good sign,” he said, adding that he would “not expect him to be in the squad next week.”

The head coach noted that Conor Bradley’s return from suspension and Jeremie Frimpong’s availability provide some cover, but also confirmed Mohamed Salah will be absent due to AFCON.

That makes Szoboszlai’s fitness even more crucial, especially after a match where Hugo Ekitike’s opener came from a Gomez assist, underlining how closely linked the team has become.

With Liverpool now unbeaten in four league games and sitting fifth, keeping their most consistent performer fit could be vital in closing the gap. For now, attention remains firmly on Szoboszlai’s recovery — because losing him would be a major blow
