Tottenham Hotspur supporters were left fuming after spotting that Spurs had been listed at the foot of a newly circulated Premier League table ahead of the 2026/27 season — though the reason behind their position was far less dramatic than it first appeared.
The table, which spread rapidly across social media, had nothing to do with points, predictions, or projected finishes. Clubs had instead been arranged according to their commonly used nicknames rather than official names — meaning Tottenham, widely known as “Spurs,” were dropped to 20th place, with clubs whose nicknames sit earlier in the alphabet ranked above them.
Many supporters quickly clocked that the table carried no sporting weight whatsoever, but that did little to dampen the frustration. Others questioned the logic of the Premier League opting for nicknames over official club names in the first place, particularly given the confusion it caused.
“I know it means absolutely nothing,” one fan wrote, “but after last season the last thing Spurs fans wanted to see was our club sitting bottom of a Premier League table again.” Another added: “Just list clubs by their official names and avoid the confusion altogether.”
The reaction snowballed online, with supporters split between genuine irritation and dry humour — some joking that Tottenham had somehow found a way to start the new campaign in 20th place without a single ball being kicked.
The episode also stirred wider debate about consistency in how the Premier League presents official graphics and promotional materials to supporters.
In reality, all attention at the club is trained firmly on Roberto De Zerbi’s summer rebuild. After a gruelling season that went down to the wire before survival was confirmed, supporters are desperate for genuine progress — and no alphabetical quirk is going to distract them from that for long.
