Reports of Real Madrid’s interest in Tottenham centre-back Micky van de Ven have resurfaced, with claims that incoming Madrid manager José Mourinho is a keen admirer of the Dutch defender. However, much of the latest speculation traces back to the Sunday Mirror, a publication with a mixed track record on transfer stories, and should be treated with some caution.
That said, Madrid’s interest in Van de Ven is nothing new. The Spanish club have reportedly been monitoring him since late 2024, identifying him as a long-term replacement for ageing defenders Antonio Rüdiger and David Alaba. His pace, composure on the ball, and ability to contribute to build-up play have made him one of the most coveted centre-backs in Europe.
His performances in the 2025/26 season only reinforced that reputation, despite some questions raised over his consistency during the campaign’s tougher stretches. Regardless, his overall quality continues to attract attention from the continent’s biggest clubs.
Tottenham are keen to hold onto him and believe another season at the club would serve his development well. Spurs are also in a strong contractual position, giving them leverage in any potential negotiations. However, a sizeable offer from Madrid next summer — particularly if Van de Ven impresses at the World Cup — could put that resolve to the test.
The club have made several attempts to hand him an improved deal through to 2031, reportedly with a significant pay rise attached, but talks have moved slowly and the player is yet to put pen to paper.
Despite the uncertainty, Tottenham remain quietly confident that Van de Ven will commit to the project. The situation nonetheless underlines a broader truth — keeping top players requires visible ambition, and for Spurs, progress both on and off the pitch will be the deciding factor.
