Tottenham remain firmly in the hunt for Newcastle midfielder Sandro Tonali, undeterred by Fabrizio Romano recently removing a pinned social media post about their interest in the Italian.
De Zerbi’s side have hit the ground running this summer, bringing in Andy Robertson and Marcos Senesi on free transfers following their respective departures from Liverpool and Bournemouth. Jan Paul van Hecke has since joined from Brighton as their third addition, as Spurs look to build a squad capable of avoiding a repeat of last season’s near-catastrophic relegation battle — they survived only on the final day, edging Everton 1–0 to finish two points above relegated West Ham.
With ambitions far greater than mere survival, Tottenham are now pushing to step up talks for Tonali, who is understood to be available for the right price. Journalist Ben Jacobs reports that Spurs are keen to land a marquee name, with De Zerbi himself stressing the need to strengthen in central midfield. According to Jacobs, a fresh bid is expected, though Manchester City are also said to be monitoring the situation.
Alarm bells rang among supporters when Romano unpinned his Tonali tweet, but the transfer insider was quick to reassure fans. Speaking on his YouTube channel, he insisted he stands by his information and maintained that Tottenham are actively working on a deal — while stressing he is only linking Spurs to the player, regardless of what other outlets may be reporting.
Not everyone is convinced the move makes sense, however. Newcastle legend Alan Shearer has raised eyebrows at the prospect, questioning whether dropping into a club that has spent consecutive seasons flirting with the drop would be a smart step for Tonali’s career. Speaking to Betfair, Shearer acknowledged the lure of London and the appeal of a new manager, but pointed to Spurs’ poor league finishes as cause for hesitation. He did add, though, that if Tonali has his heart set on leaving, Newcastle should demand upwards of £100 million and move on.
