Tottenham Hotspur are already eyeing their next big-name addition following the arrivals of Mateus Fernandes and Sandro Tonali, with transfer insider Fabrizio Romano reporting that Liverpool winger Cody Gakpo has now emerged as a genuine target.
Spurs have been among the busiest clubs in Europe this summer, completely overhauling Roberto De Zerbi’s squad after another disappointing Premier League season. Having narrowly escaped relegation, the club has thrown its weight behind the new manager with record-breaking spending as it looks to restore its standing among England’s top sides.
The rebuild started with shrewd additions in Andy Robertson, Marcos Senesi and Martin Dúbravka, before attention turned to bigger-ticket business. Jan Paul van Hecke arrived for more than £50 million, while Mateus Fernandes and Sandro Tonali followed in a pair of blockbuster midfield deals worth a combined £185 million.
Those signings have all but sealed João Palhinha’s exit on a permanent basis, with the Portuguese midfielder already posting an emotional farewell to fans after Spurs chose not to trigger their reported £22 million buy option.
With defence and midfield now well stocked, Tottenham’s attention has turned to adding more punch up front. Several left-sided attackers have been linked in recent weeks, among them Manchester City’s Savinho, AC Milan’s Rafael Leão and West Ham’s Crysencio Summerville — and now Romano says Liverpool’s Cody Gakpo is another name firmly on Spurs’ radar.
In his latest update, Romano explained that while Tottenham rate the Dutch international highly, a deal looks tough right now simply because Liverpool aren’t willing to entertain offers. He noted Liverpool haven’t told Gakpo he’s available, nor opened any talks with Spurs — the champions’ door remains firmly shut for the time being, even though Tottenham’s interest is real.
Romano did add that things could shift later in the window if Spurs come forward with a serious bid, making it a situation worth watching. Any deal would come at a hefty price too — Gakpo reportedly earns around £250,000 a week, and Liverpool would demand a big fee before letting a key attacker join a direct Premier League rival.
Should that route prove too difficult, Tottenham may already have a fallback plan. Reports out of Italy suggest AC Milan could be willing to let Rafael Leão go for around €60 million (£51 million) — well below what many expected for a player considered one of Europe’s most dangerous wide players. Leão has said openly he’s ready for a fresh challenge after a productive spell at San Siro, with the Premier League said to be his preferred next step — a stance that’s caught the eye of Tottenham, Arsenal and Manchester United, all of whom are hunting for left-sided attacking reinforcements.
For De Zerbi, landing another top-tier attacker is seen as the final piece of this summer’s rebuild. Having already spent heavily on defence and midfield, Spurs now want a genuine match-winner who can lift their attacking play and push the club back toward the top half of the table.
Whether that ends up being Gakpo, Leão, or someone else entirely remains to be seen — but one thing looks certain: Tottenham’s transfer window isn’t done yet, with another major move reportedly in the works before it closes.
