Tottenham’s rumoured pursuit of Napoli midfielder Antonio Vergara has been shut down, with journalist Fabrizio Romano stating the story doesn’t hold up.
Even though Spurs had already added Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes to their midfield ranks, chatter persisted that De Zerbi’s side wanted one more central midfielder before deadline day. Vergara’s name came back into the conversation after claims emerged that Tottenham had renewed their interest, having missed out on the 23-year-old back in January. Some Italian sources went as far as claiming Spurs were up against Atalanta, Roma, Bournemouth and Como in the race for him.
Romano, though, has knocked that story down, saying Tottenham have had no involvement in a summer move for the Italy international. Instead, he reports Vergara is close to putting pen to paper on a new long-term deal with Napoli, complete with a pay rise.
On his YouTube channel, Romano was clear that the Spurs rumours simply don’t add up. He noted Vergara was never actually on Tottenham’s radar, even when the same speculation did the rounds earlier this summer, and that the player’s future lies at Napoli.
Instead of another midfielder, Romano says Manchester City’s Savinho remains the real priority for Tottenham. The Brazilian winger is still the club’s top target to bolster the wide areas, and that’s where their focus now lies.
Talk of a Savinho switch has been gathering pace, with multiple reports suggesting the two clubs are closing in on a deal. The most recent word is that City are working to push through a £65 million sale to Spurs.
Should it go through, Savinho would mark another significant signing in De Zerbi’s rebuild, with Tottenham said to be eyeing at least two further attacking additions before the window shuts.
