Liverpool have reportedly been presented with an opportunity to sign Real Madrid defender Raúl Asencio, with the 23-year-old potentially providing a solution to one of Andoni Iraola’s biggest problems.
The Reds have endured a difficult pre-season defensively, with Iraola struggling to call upon an experienced centre-back. Joe Gomez’s early injury against Sunderland further exposed Liverpool’s lack of options in the position.
With sporting director Richard Hughes still having time to strengthen the squad before the transfer window closes, Asencio has now emerged as a possible target.
According to reports, intermediaries have approached Liverpool regarding a potential move for the Spanish defender after Real Madrid made it clear that he could leave before the end of the window.
Liverpool are understood to have admired Asencio for some time, while Iraola reportedly rates him highly. His ability to operate both at centre-back and right-back would make him particularly useful to Liverpool, especially with injuries affecting Conor Bradley and Jeremie Frimpong.
The defender’s style could also suit Iraola’s high-pressing approach. Last season, Asencio recorded a 94% pass-completion rate in La Liga and regularly showed an ability to win possession in advanced areas.
However, there is one major obstacle. Asencio reportedly has no intention of leaving Real Madrid and wants to stay at the Bernabéu to compete for a place in José Mourinho’s starting XI.
With no formal negotiations currently underway, a transfer to Liverpool remains unlikely unless the 23-year-old changes his mind.
Liverpool would therefore need to convince Asencio that he would play an important role at Anfield. If they succeed, his versatility and defensive qualities could provide Iraola with a much-needed boost and help solve one of the manager’s biggest squad problems.
