As Tottenham Hotspur supporters argue over which attacking additions the club should target in January, a familiar problem continues to linger — one that has arguably been just as damaging as their recent lack of goals.
Spurs have long struggled to move players on at the right moment, restricting their ability to raise funds for elite forwards and to free up space in the squad for upgrades. Brennan Johnson highlights this issue perfectly: a gifted Premier League attacker, but one who has not consistently shown the complete skill set required at Tottenham.
Since the arrival of Mohammed Kudus, Johnson’s influence has declined sharply. Although there was hope that Thomas Frank could help reignite his form, the Welsh winger has gradually slipped down the pecking order, with the manager unable to fully unlock his potential.
Interest in Johnson has increased ahead of the January transfer window. Crystal Palace, among several other Premier League sides, have shown admiration, and reports now suggest Tottenham are edging closer to agreeing his departure.
Respected journalist David Ornstein of The Athletic reports that Spurs and Palace have already “reached an agreement” on a previously discussed £35 million fee. However, the move is not yet complete, as Johnson must still agree on personal terms with the South London club.
Fabrizio Romano has also revealed that Bournemouth are prepared to match Palace’s offer and are viewed as strong contenders for Johnson’s signature. With the transfer window approaching, the forward is expected to consider his options carefully. Everton, Sunderland, and Aston Villa are also keeping tabs on the situation. Despite the number of interested clubs, Tottenham are expected to finalize the sale without major complications.
With both Palace and Bournemouth willing to meet Spurs’ valuation and offering Johnson the prospect of more regular minutes, the transfer appears likely to progress — though the situation could still change as the window unfolds.
