Liverpool Sign Off Pre-Season with Comfortable 2-0 Win Over Como at Anfield
Liverpool wrapped up their 2026 pre-season schedule in style, seeing off Como 2-0 at Anfield on Sunday evening. Goals from Cody Gakpo and debutant Jeremy Jacquet in the first half were enough to secure all three points and send the Anfield faithful home happy ahead of the new campaign.
Jacquet was the standout performer on the night, earning a near-perfect showing on his first outing in a Liverpool shirt. He looked composed and combative at the back from the opening whistle, winning his individual battles and breaking up Como’s attacks with authority. He capped off the display by nodding home a close-range finish just before the break, giving fans an early glimpse of why the club pushed so hard to land him.
Gakpo also impressed despite the ongoing speculation surrounding his Anfield future, delivering a performance that reminded everyone of his value to the squad. Operating down the left flank, the Dutchman gave Como’s defenders a torrid time with his unpredictable movement, capping it off with a well-taken left-footed strike before turning provider for Jacquet’s opener with a clever pass into the box.
Jeremie Frimpong was another bright spark, thriving in Arne Slot’s setup with a lively display on the right side. His energetic overlapping runs added extra bite to Liverpool’s attacking play, and he was directly involved in the opening goal, whipping in the cross that Gakpo converted. He also chipped in defensively, making a handful of important interventions in the first half.
Virgil van Dijk looked sharp as he builds up his fitness ahead of the Premier League opener, marshalling the backline alongside Jacquet and helping his new teammate settle in. It wasn’t quite as smooth for Alexander Isak, who struggled to find his rhythm ahead of a highly anticipated return to St. James’ Park in Liverpool colours. Despite being fed several promising opportunities in the box, his finishing let him down throughout, and he struggled to make much of an attacking impact overall.
Elsewhere, Alisson, Kerkez, Gravenberch, Szoboszlai, Ngumoha, and Wirtz all featured, while a handful of substitutes including Araujo, Koumas, Munoz, Nyoni, and Wight also got minutes off the bench as Slot rotated his squad ahead of the new season.
