Tottenham have won the race for highly-rated West Ham youngster Isaac Allen, pipping bitter rivals Arsenal to the signature of one of the country’s most exciting young talents.
The 15-year-old midfielder, who skippers England’s Under-15s, had been strongly linked with a move to Arsenal, who’d spent weeks trying to lure him to their academy setup. Spurs, though, swooped late to get the deal over the line, persuading Allen and his camp that Hotspur Way was the best fit for his development going forward.
It’s a significant win for the club in the ongoing scrap for the country’s top young talent. Having already missed out on academy prospect Elijah Upson to Arsenal earlier in the window, Tottenham were keen to bounce back and land one of England’s hottest properties at youth level.
The timing matters too, given the club has seen several academy graduates move on recently. Will Lankshear has departed for Middlesbrough, Alfie Devine has joined Preston North End, and Tynan Thompson has sealed a switch to Manchester United. Those departures underlined the importance of Spurs refreshing their pipeline of young talent as they look to the future.
The signing comes on the back of a busy summer at first-team level too, with Sandro Tonali, Mateus Fernandes and Jan Paul van Hecke already arriving at the club. But it’s clear Tottenham are just as focused on strengthening things behind the scenes, making sure there’s a clear route from the academy into the senior setup.
Scouts have been quick to praise Allen’s calmness in possession, sharp tactical understanding and natural leadership qualities in the middle of the park, attributes that mark him out as one of the best players in his age group.
With the paperwork now sorted between the two clubs, Allen is set to formally join Tottenham’s academy in time for the new season, where he’ll continue developing as one of the brightest young prospects on the club’s books.
