What exactly makes a football team the best in the world? There is no simple answer. Recent trophies, league positions and overall results can provide useful clues, but football is unpredictable, and comparing clubs from completely different leagues is never straightforward.
For instance, Manchester United have never faced Cristiano Ronaldo’s Al-Nassr in a competitive match. Many supporters might expect United to win comfortably, but there is no way to know what would actually happen until the teams meet.
That is what makes global club rankings so subjective. Fortunately, Opta has attempted to remove some of the guesswork by using its Power Rankings system, which has recently been updated.

Opta’s rankings are based on an Elo-style algorithm that examines the results of more than 2.5 million matches. Each club receives a rating that can then be compared with teams from leagues around the world. The calculation considers factors including a team’s league performance, the strength of its domestic division, its country’s football rating and the quality of the continent in which it competes.
With those factors taken into account, here are the 30 highest-rated football teams in the world, along with a look at their recent performances and what has influenced their positions.
World’s Best Teams: 30th–21st
Tottenham, Leverkusen and Juventus make the list
Tottenham Hotspur begin the top 30 in 30th place, despite narrowly escaping relegation from the Premier League on the final day of the 2025/26 campaign. They are followed by Everton in 29th and Atletico Madrid in 28th.
Atletico have slipped down the rankings after finishing fourth in La Liga last season, ending the campaign 25 points behind champions Barcelona.
Leeds United sit 27th after a respectable return to the Premier League, with Daniel Farke’s side finishing 14th. They will now be aiming to push higher and potentially challenge for European football.
Bayer Leverkusen occupy 26th despite finishing sixth in Germany. Their overall campaign was still considered strong enough to earn them a place ahead of Juventus and Club Brugge.
Juventus are 25th after a disappointing sixth-place finish in Serie A, while Club Brugge take 24th following their 20th Belgian league title.
Fulham are ranked 23rd after another consistent season. Como, who continue to impress under Cesc Fabregas, take 22nd, while Roma complete the group in 21st.

World’s Best Teams: 20th–11th
Chelsea, Sporting CP and Dortmund feature
Crystal Palace narrowly make the top 20 in 20th position. Their Premier League campaign in 2025/26 was underwhelming, but they still finished the season with two pieces of silverware after winning the Community Shield and UEFA Conference League.
Chelsea are 19th following their FA Cup final defeat and failure to secure Champions League qualification. One place above them are Benfica, who completed an unbeaten Portuguese league campaign.
Nottingham Forest sit 17th after successfully avoiding relegation while also reaching the Europa League semi-finals, where they were eventually eliminated by Aston Villa.
Brentford enjoyed an impressive season under first-time manager Keith Andrews. Despite losing several important players and former boss Thomas Frank the previous summer, the Bees have climbed to 14th.
Borussia Dortmund and Sporting CP sit above Brentford in 15th and 16th respectively.
The final three positions in this section all belong to Premier League clubs. Newcastle United are 13th, Brighton & Hove Albion take 12th, while Bournemouth occupy 11th.

Arsenal lead Bayern Munich at the top
The final 10 contain some of the biggest and strongest clubs in world football, with every team coming from Europe.
Liverpool occupy 10th place with a 94.6 rating. The Reds endured a difficult campaign, finishing without a trophy while conceding more goals than ever before. However, their squad remains packed with quality, and they will hope for a major improvement under Andoni Iraola next season.
Inter Milan are next in ninth after reclaiming the Serie A crown under Christian Chivu, taking the title back from Napoli.
Real Madrid sit eighth with a rating of 95.1. Los Blancos ended another season without silverware, their second consecutive trophyless campaign, and will be looking to returning manager Jose Mourinho to restore their winning mentality in 2026/27.
Aston Villa claim seventh after a superb campaign. They finished fourth in the Premier League and lifted the Europa League trophy, ending a 44-year wait for silverware.
Manchester United are sixth after securing third place in the Premier League. Their strong run of 11 victories in 16 matches under Michael Carrick helped propel them up the rankings.
Barcelona lead the Spanish contingent in fifth. Hansi Flick’s team secured a second straight league title after an outstanding campaign, scoring 95 goals and winning all 19 of their home league matches.
Paris Saint-Germain surprisingly sit fourth. Luis Enrique’s side once again dominated France, winning the domestic title and successfully defending their Champions League crown after defeating Arsenal in the final in Budapest.
Manchester City occupy third with an impressive 98.2 rating. City completed a domestic double by winning both the Carabao Cup and FA Cup. New manager Enzo Maresca will now aim to return the club to the very top of world football after replacing Pep Guardiola.
Bayern Munich are second with a perfect 100 rating. Vincent Kompany’s team produced a remarkable 2025/26 season, with an attacking lineup featuring Harry Kane, Luis Diaz, Michael Olise, Serge Gnabry, Lennart Karl and Jamal Musiala proving extremely difficult for opponents to contain.
At the summit are Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal, statistically ranked as the best football team in the world.
Despite suffering a heartbreaking Champions League final defeat to PSG, the Gunners enjoyed a phenomenal campaign and ended their 22-year wait for the Premier League title. Arsenal also combined an outstanding defensive record with an explosive attack that produced more than 100 goals across all competitions.
According to Opta’s latest Power Rankings, Arsenal therefore sit at the top of world football.
