Tottenham’s Cody Gakpo pursuit hits a major stumbling block

Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly still looking to add another attacker before the transfer window closes, but their attempt to sign Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo has hit a major obstacle.

Spurs have already spent heavily this summer as Roberto De Zerbi continues his squad rebuild. The club have brought in Jan Paul van Hecke, Mateus Fernandes and Sandro Tonali, with their spending already exceeding £200 million. Tottenham are also expected to complete deals for Manchester City duo Savinho and Omar Marmoush, reportedly for around £140 million combined.

Despite those major additions, De Zerbi reportedly wants one more attacking player. One of the names on Tottenham’s radar is Liverpool’s Gakpo.

According to Voetbal International journalist Joost Blaauwhof, however, negotiations between Tottenham and Liverpool have currently gone quiet. Spurs are believed to have offered around €69 million for the Netherlands international, but Liverpool may be holding out for a higher fee.

The situation appears to depend heavily on Liverpool’s own transfer plans. The report claims Tottenham’s chances of signing Gakpo could increase if Liverpool manage to bring in Bradley Barcola from Paris Saint-Germain.

Liverpool are also reportedly looking at other attacking options, including Ibrahim Mbaye and Yankuba Minteh. Until Liverpool strengthen their own attack, the club could be reluctant to allow Gakpo to leave.

For Tottenham, this means the Gakpo deal is far from straightforward. If Liverpool fail to sign another winger, Spurs could struggle to get their man before the transfer deadline.

In short: Spurs want Gakpo, a €69m offer has reportedly been made, but talks have currently gone into “radio silence.” Tottenham’s hopes could depend on whether Liverpool successfully sign another attacker first.
