Newcastle United’s hunt for a new midfield leader is gathering pace as the Magpies prepare for life without Bruno Guimaraes. With the Brazilian’s expected departure leaving a big gap in the middle of the park, Newcastle are weighing up several options, and Tottenham Hotspur’s Lucas Bergvall has emerged as one of the names drawing serious interest.
According to Fabrizio Romano, Bergvall remains firmly on Newcastle’s radar despite the recent managerial shake-up at St James’ Park. The Sweden international was previously admired by former boss Eddie Howe, and that interest appears to have carried over even after his exit.
Romano says Bergvall is still being discussed internally by Newcastle’s recruitment staff as the club works with new head coach Matthias Jaissle to settle on its next midfield target. Speaking on the GIVEMESPORT Market Madness podcast, Romano explained Bergvall is one of several midfielders under consideration as Newcastle look to strengthen the position, noting that talks with Jaissle are ongoing and that Bergvall was someone they liked partly because he could leave Spurs this window, having already earned Howe’s approval. That suggests his name isn’t simply a holdover from the previous regime but is being freshly assessed under Jaissle.
Further recruitment meetings are expected in the coming days to determine Newcastle’s main priority. Romano added that over the next two to three days the club will decide exactly what kind of player they want to bring in. While stressing Bergvall isn’t the only option on the table, Romano believes Newcastle are all but certain to add a midfielder given the size of the gap left by Guimaraes.
Bergvall’s own situation at Tottenham adds another layer to the story, with reports suggesting the 20-year-old may be considering his future in search of more regular first-team football. He’s also drawn interest from Nottingham Forest, while Newcastle have reportedly already tested Spurs with an opening bid that was turned down. A further, improved offer could follow, though Football Insider has suggested Newcastle may wait until UEFA’s 45-day accounting window tied to Sandro Tonali’s move to Tottenham closes in mid-August before returning with another approach.
Tottenham, for their part, don’t appear willing to make it straightforward. Head coach Roberto De Zerbi has spoken publicly of his admiration for Bergvall and said he’d like the midfielder to stay, while acknowledging the final call rests with the player himself.
That stance could matter if Newcastle press ahead, given Bergvall is viewed as both an immediate option and a long-term investment. The Magpies aren’t short of alternatives either, having also been linked with Felix Nmecha, Angelo Stiller, Victor Fröholdt and former Spurs man Pierre-Emile Højbjerg — but Romano’s update suggests Bergvall remains very much in the mix as Newcastle plan for a midfield rebuild.
The challenge for Newcastle will be finding someone capable of replacing Guimaraes’ creativity and leadership. Bergvall may not offer an identical profile, but his technical quality, composure and ceiling make him an appealing option for a club building toward the future — leaving Jaissle and the recruitment team to decide over the coming days whether he’s the right long-term piece or whether to pursue a pricier, more established alternative.
For Tottenham, a serious Newcastle approach would present a difficult choice: stick with Bergvall’s long-term potential or consider cashing in for a significant fee. With the window entering its final stretch, his situation is one to keep an eye on.
