Tottenham Dealt Transfer Blow As Man United Set To Retain Their Star At Old Trafford This Season

Tottenham Hotspur remain intent on strengthening their attacking options before the transfer window shuts, with the North London club still keen to add quality and depth in the final third.

Spurs have already had a busy, ambitious summer, addressing several long-standing weaknesses. The club have invested heavily in defence, bringing in Jan Paul van Hecke, Andy Robertson and Marcos Senesi to give Roberto De Zerbi a more solid foundation heading into the new campaign. Midfield has also been overhauled, with Mateus Fernandes and Sandro Tonali adding technical quality, energy and experience — signings that underline Tottenham’s willingness to spend and compete with the league’s leading clubs.

Despite that strong business, one area remains unresolved: the attack. Spurs are yet to make a major attacking addition this summer, and that could become a genuine concern if it isn’t addressed before deadline day. Several forwards have been linked, but concrete progress has been limited of late, a situation made more pressing by the club’s ongoing injury problems. Tottenham need greater depth up front, ideally players comfortable on the left but flexible enough to play centrally too.

Under De Zerbi, tactical adaptability matters — attackers who can interchange, press effectively and offer a consistent goal threat. That means Spurs can’t afford to start the season overly reliant on a small pool of attacking options, increasing the pressure on the recruitment team to land at least one more forward before the window closes.

One name strongly linked has been Manchester United’s Marcus Rashford. Tottenham reportedly viewed the England international as an attractive addition following his loan spell at Barcelona, seeing him as someone capable of improving their attack immediately while bringing top-level experience. His versatility — able to play left wing, through the middle, and with pace in behind — was seen as a good fit for De Zerbi’s system. Spurs were said to be exploring a permanent deal worth around €42million, despite Rashford’s £325,000-a-week wages.

That pursuit now appears to have stalled. Fabrizio Romano reports Rashford has returned to Manchester United’s Carrington base for pre-season, and is leaning toward staying at Old Trafford this season — a potentially significant setback if De Zerbi had earmarked him as a priority target. United also appear increasingly open to keeping Rashford under Michael Carrick rather than sanctioning a sale.

With time running short, Tottenham may need to shift focus quickly. One alternative to emerge is Manchester City’s Omar Marmoush, whose pace, movement and positional versatility could offer De Zerbi another attacking option. Reports suggest the Egypt international could be open to a move in search of more regular football, potentially making that deal easier to negotiate than some of Spurs’ other targets.

The priority for Tottenham is clear: defence and midfield have been strengthened significantly, but the rebuild won’t feel complete without more firepower up front. With the season approaching and injuries already a factor, the club faces a decisive few weeks — whether that means reviving interest in another forward or pushing for Marmoush. Getting it right could leave Spurs entering the campaign considerably stronger; failing to do so risks leaving attacking depth as one of the bigger concerns of De Zerbi’s first season in charge.
