Jordan Henderson was arguably never given the appreciation he deserved during his Liverpool career. He was never going to reach the legendary heights of Steven Gerrard, but his influence at Anfield went far beyond individual performances.
Henderson was a leader, a role model and someone who constantly demanded high standards from those around him. Most importantly, he was determined to prove himself at Liverpool.

There was a period when his future at the club looked uncertain. He had failed to fully live up to expectations and was even considered surplus to requirements. Yet Henderson refused to walk away. He stayed, worked relentlessly and eventually fought his way back into contention.
By the end of Brendan Rodgers’ reign, he had developed into one of Liverpool’s most reliable midfielders. Under Jurgen Klopp, his importance grew even further.
Liverpool’s success during that era would have been difficult to imagine without Henderson. His energy, pressing and willingness to do the dirty work allowed the more technically gifted players around him to thrive. He was a key component of Klopp’s gegenpressing system.
But Henderson’s value wasn’t limited to what he did with the ball.
His leadership qualities were arguably just as important. Xabi Alonso has recognised those qualities at Chelsea, while Thomas Tuchel has also valued Henderson’s presence with England. He is the type of player who can influence an entire dressing room.
Henderson was constantly communicating, setting standards in training and leading by example. His willingness to be vocal on the pitch was particularly valuable because football is ultimately a team sport where communication can make a huge difference.

During his time at Anfield, Henderson was often the loudest voice on the pitch. Since his departure, Liverpool have arguably lacked that kind of commanding presence in midfield.
Dominik Szoboszlai could eventually grow into that role, but he is still developing his authority within the squad. Virgil van Dijk remains a major leader, although even his influence is different from the one Henderson provided.
That is why Liverpool’s latest addition could prove extremely important.
Much of the attention surrounding Ronald Araujo’s arrival has focused on his fitness concerns and recent form. However, there is another side to the transfer that deserves recognition.
Liverpool have lost several experienced leaders this summer, including Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson. As a result, adding another strong personality to Andoni Iraola’s squad could be crucial.
Araujo could be the perfect answer.
The Barcelona defender has made more than 200 appearances for the club and has also worn the captain’s armband. Like Henderson, he is known for his work ethic, intensity and willingness to demand high standards.
He is also extremely vocal on the pitch.
“I like to talk on the pitch, I’m talking the whole game. It’s a way of being more focused, and that I think helps me and also the team,” Araujo has said.
That mentality could make him particularly valuable to Liverpool.
Araujo’s transfer is now official, and with it, Liverpool may have secured more than just another defender. They may have found a new leader capable of bringing some of the qualities Henderson once provided at Anfield.
For Liverpool, this is a signing to celebrate—not one to regret.
