Tottenham Step Up Savinho Pursuit as Romano Provides Fresh Update
Tottenham Hotspur’s long-standing interest in Manchester City winger Savinho has taken another interesting turn, with Fabrizio Romano providing an update after the Brazil international missed City training on Thursday.
Spurs have been monitoring the 22-year-old for more than a year and remain determined to bring him to north London after failing to complete a deal last summer.
Savinho is reportedly a priority target for Tottenham, with manager Roberto De Zerbi also giving the move his approval as he looks to strengthen his attacking options before the September 1 transfer deadline.
The winger was absent from Manchester City’s open training session on Thursday, with the club confirming that he was unavailable due to illness.
However, Romano has now reported that Savinho has once again made it clear to City this week that he wants to leave and join Tottenham.
Romano has previously suggested there is a “very good chance” of Savinho moving to Spurs, although a deal could depend on City securing a replacement first.
There have also been claims from a prominent Tottenham source that the club expects negotiations to reach a positive conclusion within the next week, with the transfer potentially costing around £70 million.
Could Tottenham Be Paying Too Much?
Tottenham have shown a willingness to spend heavily in their bid to support De Zerbi and climb the Premier League table after consecutive 17th-place finishes. However, the potential £70m fee for Savinho could still raise some eyebrows.
The Brazilian joined City from Girona for around £30m two years ago and has since made 84 appearances for the Premier League champions.
His overall numbers have been respectable rather than spectacular, while he has struggled to establish himself as a regular starter.
Savinho’s Manchester City record:
– Appearances: 84
– Starts: 50
– Goals: 7
– Assists: 16
Savinho clearly possesses significant talent, but Tottenham would expect considerably more if they are to invest £70m in him.
Regular playing time and the backing of a manager who strongly believes in his ability could help unlock his potential. For now, though, Spurs would arguably be paying a premium for a player they have been pursuing for more than a year.
