Tottenham Step Up Cody Gakpo Pursuit
Tottenham have already invested heavily this summer, but Roberto De Zerbi still appears to be looking for more firepower in his revamped attack.
Spurs have strengthened their midfield with Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes, while Andy Robertson has brought valuable experience to the defence. However, attention is now turning towards adding another versatile attacker.
Cody Gakpo is emerging as a serious option. The Dutch international is most effective on the left, where he can cut inside onto his stronger right foot, but he has also featured centrally for both Liverpool and the Netherlands. At 27, he would offer Tottenham proven Premier League experience.
Gakpo joined Liverpool from PSV Eindhoven in January 2023 and initially needed time to adapt. Even so, he scored seven goals in his first 26 appearances before developing into a regular and highly versatile member of the squad.
His most productive season at Anfield came in 2024/25, when he scored 18 goals in all competitions as Liverpool won the Premier League. One of those goals came against Tottenham on the day Liverpool secured the title.
His numbers dropped last season, with nine goals and six assists from 52 appearances, but his ability to operate in multiple attacking positions remains a major attraction for De Zerbi. Gakpo could play from the left, provide support through the middle and give Spurs another dependable source of goals.
However, Liverpool remain in a strong negotiating position.
The Reds handed Gakpo a new long-term contract worth a reported £250,000 per week last August, meaning they have little reason to sell unless the club’s wider plans under Andoni Iraola change significantly.
Tottenham in ‘very concrete’ Gakpo talks
Sky Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg has claimed Tottenham are now engaged in “very concrete” talks regarding Gakpo and have also contacted Liverpool about a potential transfer.
There is, however, an important caveat. Sources close to the player have reportedly denied that any agreement has been reached, either on personal terms or over a transfer.
For now, the pursuit remains ongoing rather than being a deal close to completion.
Gakpo’s combination of strength, experience and positional versatility makes him an obvious target for Tottenham. He could compete for a starting role on the left, operate centrally when required and add another significant goal threat to De Zerbi’s attack.
The biggest obstacle will be Liverpool.
Tottenham may be able to convince Gakpo and continue negotiations, but his long-term contract means Liverpool hold the upper hand. Unless the Reds decide that selling him fits their evolving transfer plans, Spurs could discover that finding the right attacker is far easier than convincing Liverpool to let him go.
