Tottenham are on the verge of completing two major departures, with Cristian Romero and Djed Spence both set to leave the club imminently.
Spence has already arrived in Milan ahead of his medical at Inter, following an agreement between the Serie A champions and Spurs worth around £25.6million. The England international is seeking regular first-team football after finding himself behind Pedro Porro in the pecking order, despite his strong World Cup showing. Porro recently committed his future to Tottenham by signing a new five-year contract.
Tottenham are keen to raise significant funds before the September 1 deadline after spending more than £260m on six new players during an ambitious summer rebuild.
Spence is expected to join fellow England international John Stones at Inter, with the former Manchester City defender having moved to the San Siro as a free agent last month. Inter could also revisit their interest in Liverpool midfielder Curtis Jones following Davide Frattesi’s loan move to Lazio.
Meanwhile, Spurs captain Romero is due to undergo his medical in Spain on Friday before completing a £34m move to Atletico Madrid, including add-ons. Tottenham have also negotiated a 15 per cent sell-on clause as part of the deal.
Romero’s departure means Spurs will need to appoint their second new captain in just 12 months. Barcelona and Inter had previously shown interest in the Argentina international, while Arsenal were also linked with a surprise move. However, Tottenham were reportedly unwilling to consider selling their captain to their north London rivals.
After four seasons in north London, Romero’s exit had been expected as he looks for a new challenge. He returned to London ahead of the final league fixture and was present as Tottenham secured a crucial 1-0 victory to avoid relegation under Roberto De Zerbi.
