Liverpool are preparing to reward one of their brightest young stars with a new long-term contract and a significant pay rise at Anfield.
One of the standout positives of the 2025/26 campaign was the rapid emergence of Rio Ngumoha. The 17-year-old progressed from making his Premier League debut to earning international recognition with England in just over nine months.
The teenage winger quickly became a fan favourite at Anfield, regularly leaving supporters on their feet with his fearless runs at defenders and impressive dribbling. His outstanding performances are now expected to be rewarded with a new deal that reflects Liverpool’s confidence in his development.
Ngumoha set for five-year Liverpool deal
According to Paul Joyce of The Times, Ngumoha is expected to sign a fresh five-year contract with Liverpool after turning 18 on August 29.
Under current rules, players under 18 can only sign contracts of up to three years. Ngumoha’s existing agreement, which was signed last autumn, runs until 2028, but the winger is expected to extend his stay at Anfield until 2031 once he becomes eligible to sign a longer deal.
The new contract is also expected to include a substantial salary increase, reflecting his growing importance to the first team. Capology currently lists his wages at around £25,000 per week, placing him among the lower earners in Andoni Iraola’s squad.
Joyce also reported that Ngumoha has been challenged by Iraola to demonstrate that he can be an effective option on the right wing, in addition to his preferred role on the left.
Liverpool have an easy decision to make
Liverpool have plenty of difficult decisions to make behind the scenes, but handing Ngumoha a long-term contract and improved wages should be one of the simplest.
The teenager has been outstanding over the past year, earning praise for his fearless and energetic style of play. His confidence, directness and ability to take on defenders have made him one of the most exciting young players at Anfield.
The 2026/27 season will bring a different challenge, however. Opponents are now more familiar with his qualities, while expectations will be significantly higher after the impressive standard he set last campaign.
Still, Ngumoha has shown tremendous self-belief and appears ready to embrace the challenge. He has also made it clear that he is comfortable operating on either flank, giving Liverpool another valuable attacking option.
After reportedly attracting serious interest from Bayern Munich earlier in the summer, Ngumoha now appears set to commit his long-term future to Liverpool. If his development continues at its current pace, securing his future could prove to be a major victory for the Reds.
