Liverpool’s pursuit of Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton has suffered another setback, with Manchester City reportedly seeing their approach for the England international rejected.
The 22-year-old has become a key target for Liverpool as Andoni Iraola looks to strengthen his midfield, particularly with Curtis Jones potentially heading to Inter Milan.
Palace, however, appear determined to keep Wharton. Reports claim new manager Pierre Sage views the midfielder as an important part of his plans and has no desire to sanction a sale before the transfer window closes.
With Wharton contracted until 2029, Palace are in a strong negotiating position and are reportedly demanding around £100 million for the midfielder.
Liverpool remain interested and could still test Palace’s resolve, but City’s rejection is a major warning that the Eagles are not actively looking to sell.
For Liverpool, Wharton would provide composure, intelligent positioning and quality distribution from deep. However, spending close to £100m on a player whose club has no intention of selling would represent a huge financial gamble.
The Reds could still make a late attempt, but the latest development makes a summer move increasingly difficult. If Wharton stays at Selhurst Park, Liverpool may have to wait until next summer to reignite their interest.
