Peter Schmeichel Under Fire After Remark to Newcastle Boss Matthias Jaissle Following Liverpool Draw

Peter Schmeichel Faces Backlash After Bold Comment to Newcastle Boss Matthias Jaissle Following Liverpool Draw

Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel has come under fire from fans after making a controversial comment to Newcastle United manager Matthias Jaissle during a live interview following the Magpies’ 2-2 draw with Liverpool.

Newcastle appeared set to claim all three points at St James’ Park after taking the lead twice, but Dominik Szoboszlai’s stoppage-time penalty rescued a point for Liverpool.

Anthony Elanga opened the scoring inside five minutes before Cody Gakpo brought Liverpool level early in the second half. Joe Willock then restored Newcastle’s advantage in the 57th minute, putting Jaissle within touching distance of a dream Premier League debut.

However, Liverpool were awarded a late penalty after Lewis Hall was adjudged to have fouled Víctor Munoz inside the box. Szoboszlai stepped up in the ninth minute of stoppage time and confidently converted to make it 2-2.

Jaissle Unhappy With Late Penalty

Speaking after the match, Jaissle admitted he was frustrated by the decision and suggested the penalty was extremely soft.

The Newcastle boss, who replaced Eddie Howe this summer after spending three years managing Al-Ahli in Saudi Arabia, joked that he had to be careful with his criticism because he did not want to receive a fine.

Jaissle was nevertheless pleased with his team’s overall display, praising the players for their commitment and determination despite the disappointment of conceding so late.

He acknowledged that Newcastle are currently going through a major transition but insisted the attitude shown by his players was exactly what he expects from them.

Schmeichel’s Lewis Hall Comment Sparks Outrage

The biggest talking point after the game, however, came during Schmeichel’s post-match interview with Jaissle.

While working for Viaplay, the former United goalkeeper told the Newcastle manager directly: “We [Manchester United] are looking at your left-back.”

Jaissle initially appeared confused and responded, “Pardon?”

Schmeichel then repeated the claim, suggesting Manchester United were interested in England international Lewis Hall.

Jaissle immediately dismissed the idea, responding: “No chance. No chance.”

The exchange quickly spread across social media, with several Newcastle supporters accusing Schmeichel of behaving unprofessionally by discussing a potential transfer during a live television interview.

One fan described the comments as “unprofessional,” while another called the incident embarrassing.

Others argued that Schmeichel should not have brought up Manchester United’s interest in Hall directly to Jaissle on live television, with some branding the moment disrespectful and inappropriate.

Despite the controversy, Jaissle’s firm response has earned him plenty of praise from Newcastle supporters, while Schmeichel has found himself at the centre of the post-match debate.
