Arsenal Receive Fresh Julian Alvarez Transfer Message After Atletico Madrid Price Decision
Atletico Madrid have reportedly set a huge new asking price for Julian Alvarez following the Argentine striker’s uncomfortable reception from supporters during Sunday’s 2-2 draw with Villarreal.
Alvarez has been linked with a move away from Atletico this summer after expressing a desire for a new challenge. Barcelona are believed to be his preferred destination, with the Catalan giants searching for a new attacking option following Robert Lewandowski’s departure.
The 26-year-old made his first appearance of the season against Villarreal, but his return was far from smooth. His name was met with loud boos when announced inside the Metropolitano Stadium, while he was also jeered when introduced from the bench in the 66th minute.
After the match, Alvarez was reportedly told not to approach the supporters and instead headed straight down the tunnel as his teammates acknowledged the crowd.
Despite the tension, Atletico remain adamant that Alvarez is not for sale. However, reports suggest the Spanish club would consider an offer worth around €150 million (£128 million) for the Argentina international.
That development could be significant for Arsenal, who have been monitoring the striker and reportedly made contact with both Atletico and Alvarez’s representatives last week.
A source close to Atletico’s leadership has reportedly indicated that the only scenario in which Alvarez would leave is if Arsenal—or another interested club—meets the enormous asking price.
The major obstacle for Arsenal could be Alvarez himself. The striker is understood to be more interested in joining Barcelona than returning to the Premier League, meaning the Gunners may need clear encouragement from the player before taking their interest further.
Atletico boss Diego Simeone also addressed the situation after the Villarreal draw, stressing the importance of keeping the squad united and having quality attacking options if the club are to challenge for major honours.
Meanwhile, Barcelona opened their La Liga campaign with a dominant 5-0 victory over Elche, despite not having a senior striker available. Raphinha and Fermin Lopez both scored twice, while new signing Karim Adeyemi also found the net on his debut.
With Alvarez still seemingly high on Barcelona’s wishlist, Arsenal now face a major decision if they want to compete for his signature—with Atletico’s reported €150 million valuation setting a massive financial hurdle.
