Tottenham Still Pushing to Finally Sign Cody Gakpo After Years of Interest
Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly still determined to sign Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo, despite Manchester City now showing interest in the Dutchman, according to talkSPORT.
Spurs have already enjoyed a hectic summer transfer window, bringing in seven players, with Savinho the latest arrival under Roberto De Zerbi. He has joined the likes of Andy Robertson, Marcos Senesi, Martin Dubravka, Jan Paul van Hecke, Mateus Fernandes and Sandro Tonali.
Tottenham have also reportedly reached an agreement with Manchester City to bring in Omar Marmoush on a season-long loan, with an obligation to make the move permanent next summer. Despite that, De Zerbi is still keen to add more attacking quality before the window closes.
Gakpo has remained one of Tottenham’s major targets throughout the summer, with De Zerbi viewing the Liverpool star as a potential solution on the left side of his attack.
However, Spurs are not alone in their pursuit. Manchester City have reportedly entered the race, although talkSPORT claims Tottenham remain in a strong position and a move to the Etihad is currently viewed as unlikely.
Liverpool’s pursuit of PSG winger Bradley Barcola could prove decisive. Should the Reds successfully sign Barcola, they could become more open to allowing Gakpo to leave.
The 27-year-old is reportedly interested in a move to Tottenham, although the North London club have yet to submit an official bid. Liverpool are believed to value the forward at approximately £70 million.
Gakpo has already made an impact for Liverpool this season, starting their opening Premier League match and finding the net during their 2-2 draw with Newcastle.
Spurs’ Long-Running Gakpo Pursuit
Tottenham’s interest in Gakpo is nothing new. Spurs were first linked with the Dutch forward back in March 2022, when he was still starring for PSV Eindhoven and had yet to announce himself on the world stage.
Liverpool ultimately won the race to sign him, leaving Tottenham to look elsewhere for attacking reinforcements.
More than four years later, however, Spurs could finally have another opportunity to bring Gakpo to North London.
If De Zerbi manages to complete the deal, Gakpo would add pace, versatility and proven quality to Tottenham’s attack while giving the manager another dangerous option on the left wing.
