Trent Alexander-Arnold could be set for a sensational return to Liverpool, just a year on from his move to Real Madrid.
Transfer insider Indy Kaila claims the right-back would be open to going back to Anfield should the Reds and Real Madrid find common ground on a fee. Alexander-Arnold left Liverpool as a free agent last summer after seeing out his contract, but his time in the Spanish capital hasn’t quite gone to plan — injuries and shifting positional roles hampered his debut campaign, and things have only got trickier since Real brought in Denzel Dumfries from Inter Milan. The Dutchman has reportedly started the new La Liga season as first-choice right-back, pushing Alexander-Arnold further down the pecking order and casting doubt over his long-term future at the Bernabéu.
Should that situation fail to improve, Liverpool could unexpectedly present a way out. It would be a remarkable turn of events given how his exit unfolded, but it could also give him the chance to rebuild his career back where he first established himself as one of the game’s top full-backs. It would also solve a real problem for Liverpool, who’ve been hit by injuries to their other right-back options. Jeremie Frimpong brings pace and attacking thrust from that position but is arguably better suited further forward, so Alexander-Arnold’s homecoming would fill the gap neatly — his passing range, vision and delivery from deep remain among the best in the world, capable of breaking down low blocks in ways few full-backs can match.
Of course, any deal hinges on Real Madrid being willing to part with a player they only signed twelve months ago, and there’s also the emotional side to consider — his free transfer exit left a section of the Liverpool fanbase disillusioned, so a return would mean mending some bridges. Still, football has a way of moving fast, and if his game time keeps dwindling in Madrid and Real become receptive to offers, Liverpool could get a rare shot at welcoming home one of their own academy products, whose distribution and creative spark would be hard for the club to turn down.
For now, it all comes down to whether the two clubs can strike an agreement — but Alexander-Arnold pulling on a Liverpool shirt again just a year after leaving would rank among the most dramatic twists of the transfer window.
