Liverpool midfielder Stefan Bajcetic is reportedly close to completing a permanent move to Celta Vigo, with negotiations now said to be in their final stages.
According to Sky Sports reporter Vinny O’Connor, Celta have agreed personal terms with the 21-year-old and are pushing to finalise the transfer before the summer window closes. Liverpool are also expected to retain a sell-on clause as part of the deal.
Bajcetic’s Liverpool career has been severely disrupted by injuries. He burst onto the scene during the 2022/23 season, impressing in midfield and even starting against Real Madrid in the Champions League. However, injuries limited him to just six appearances the following campaign.
Loan spells at RB Salzburg and Las Palmas followed, but the midfielder was unable to establish himself back at Anfield. He also missed Liverpool’s pre-season under Andoni Iraola, making it increasingly difficult for him to force his way into the new manager’s plans.
A return to Celta Vigo would take Bajcetic back to his hometown and the club where he began his youth career. The move could give him the opportunity to restart his career and finally put his injury struggles behind him.
For Liverpool, it is a disappointing ending to the story of a youngster who once looked destined for a major role in the team.
The expectation is that the transfer will be completed before Tuesday’s 11pm deadline.
