Cristian “Cuti” Romero has already begun a new chapter in his career following his departure from Tottenham Hotspur, but his response when questioned about his former club was far from emotional.
The Argentine defender completed his move to Atletico Madrid after spending five years in North London, where he became an important figure for Spurs and eventually wore the captain’s armband. His time at the club also included the 2024/25 Europa League triumph, ending Tottenham’s long wait for a major trophy.
However, Romero’s focus now appears to be entirely on life in Spain. Atletico Madrid officially announced his arrival on a contract running until 2031, giving Diego Simeone another experienced and aggressive option at the heart of his defence.
After making the switch, Romero was asked about Tottenham, but his answer reportedly lacked the emotion many supporters may have expected. Rather than looking back extensively at his years with Spurs, the defender appeared more interested in concentrating on his new challenge with Atletico Madrid.
His new side then enjoyed an impressive result against Sevilla. Atletico raced into a commanding position during the first half, with Alex Baena scoring twice and Ademola Lookman also finding the net. Sevilla managed to pull one back through Miguel Sierra after the break, but Atletico held firm to secure a 3-1 victory.
The victory gave Romero and Atletico another positive moment as the defender continues to settle into his new surroundings. Simeone has been careful with Romero’s integration after his recent World Cup commitments and his move from the Premier League, but the Argentine is expected to become an important part of Atletico’s defence.
Meanwhile, the situation at Tottenham has been far less positive. Spurs have had to move forward without their former captain as they attempt to recover from another disappointing result.
Romero’s departure marked the end of a significant era for both the player and Tottenham. During his five years at the club, he made 156 appearances and helped Spurs lift the Europa League, but the defender has now made it clear that his attention is firmly fixed on succeeding with Atletico Madrid.
While some Tottenham supporters may have hoped for a more sentimental response from their former captain, Romero appears ready to leave the past behind. With Atletico beginning to find their rhythm and collecting an emphatic victory over Sevilla, the Argentine defender will now be focused on establishing himself as a key figure in Simeone’s squad.
For Romero, the Tottenham chapter is over — and a new challenge in Spain has only just begun.
