“Worth More Than Anything” – Vicario Delighted to Complete Tottenham Exit
Guglielmo Vicario has made it clear that joining Juventus was exactly the move he had been hoping for after leaving Tottenham this summer.
The Italian goalkeeper was heavily linked with a return to Serie A throughout the transfer window. Inter Milan had previously shown interest, particularly with Yann Sommer’s future uncertain, while Napoli were also reportedly monitoring his situation. However, Juventus eventually won the race for his signature after Michele Di Gregorio moved to Bournemouth.
Vicario has already started both of Juventus’ Serie A matches and helped the club keep two clean sheets, making an encouraging beginning to life in Turin.
Vicario always wanted Juventus
Speaking to Gazzetta dello Sport, the 29-year-old revealed that he had been determined to join Juventus during the final stages of his Tottenham career.
“I always hoped to join Juventus, although the transfer market is something I cannot control. I went through pre-season without playing any friendlies because I was confident the transfer would happen. I waited for Juve, but I never felt like a second choice. I’m here because the club and the coach wanted me to be Juventus’ goalkeeper. It was my objective, and I achieved it.”
He also dismissed the speculation surrounding his transfer, insisting that his focus is now firmly on his new club.
“The rest is just talk. What matters is the present, not the past.”
Vicario went even further when discussing the importance of Juventus compared with his time in the Premier League. For him, the move was driven by emotion rather than simply career progression.
“Juve is worth more than the Premier League. Winning with this shirt would be the greatest satisfaction and would mean more than anything else.”
Buffon helped inspire his Juventus dream
The goalkeeper also explained that his admiration for Juventus was influenced by his childhood idol, Gianluigi Buffon.
Vicario recalled receiving a signed Buffon shirt from his cousin, who, like his father, was a Juventus supporter. The gift helped strengthen his connection with the club.
“Buffon’s signed shirt was a birthday present from my cousin, who supported Juventus like my dad. They passed their passion for Juve on to me. Gigi’s shirt stayed with me for many years and brought me luck.”
On finally putting on the famous Juventus shirt, Vicario admitted that the experience was difficult to describe.
“Wearing the Juventus shirt is a privilege and an honour. The emotions are impossible to explain. There is pride and excitement, but not fear, because fear is something you should never have in football. It’s a dream.”
A fresh start after a difficult Tottenham spell
Vicario’s comments suggest he was eager to close the chapter on his Tottenham career and begin again in Italy. Coming from a family of Juventus supporters, the opportunity to represent the Turin giants represents a particularly meaningful step in his career.
His start at Juventus has also been positive. He produced an important save against Parma and appeared composed against Frosinone, particularly when dealing with crosses, set-pieces and aerial situations.
The move could prove important for Vicario after a difficult period at Tottenham, where his confidence appeared to suffer last season. A strong beginning in Turin could give the Italian international the platform to rebuild his form and establish himself as Juventus’ long-term goalkeeper.
