Tottenham’s rough patch to open the Premier League season continued Saturday with a scoreless draw against Everton at home, as Roberto De Zerbi’s side once again failed to break through.
The result did nothing to quiet the mounting unease around the club, which despite spending heavily over the summer still couldn’t turn its attacking pressure into goals. Home supporters grew increasingly frustrated as the game wore on without a breakthrough.
What drew the most attention afterward, though, was Everton manager David Moyes’s reaction. He wasn’t especially sympathetic to Tottenham’s situation, and several Spurs fans read his comments as a deliberate jab at the club. Moyes was full of praise for his players’ defensive work, singling out their discipline, structure, and physical commitment against a Tottenham side desperate to win.
That praise was hard for Spurs fans to swallow. The club had invested heavily in the transfer window to rebuild the squad and equip De Zerbi for a push up the table, yet here they were again, unable to score. Moyes’s comments seemed to underscore how much ground Tottenham still has to make up.
Far from intimidated by Tottenham’s spending power or reputation, Everton played with confidence and left north London with a well-earned point. The draw also keeps the scrutiny on De Zerbi alive. Fans had hoped his hiring, backed by the club’s massive outlay, would bring quick improvement — instead, the attack has kept misfiring in front of goal.
That gap between what was expected and what’s actually happening is precisely why Moyes’s remarks struck a nerve. Some see them as a fair reflection of how well his own team played; others view them as yet another blunt reminder of Tottenham’s ongoing struggles.
Either way, Spurs’ next set of fixtures now matters a great deal. With tough games coming up, De Zerbi will need his costly squad to start delivering, or fan frustration risks boiling over. For now, Moyes gets to enjoy a well-drilled Everton display and a deserved point, while Tottenham are still hunting for answers.
