Tottenham 0-0 Everton: Spurs Player Ratings
Tottenham were held to a goalless draw by Everton in the Premier League on Saturday, leaving Roberto De Zerbi’s side still searching for their first league victory and goal of the season.
De Zerbi made four changes to his starting XI as Spurs looked to finally get their campaign going. Everton, however, arrived in good form under David Moyes, having remained unbeaten in their recent matches, including a late draw against Manchester United the previous weekend.
Tottenham were without Mykhailo Mudryk because of an ankle injury, while Pedro Porro and Destiny Udogie also missed the match. Richarlison was unavailable for Premier League selection, meaning Dominic Solanke and Omar Marmoush started together up front for the first time.
Spurs began with plenty of energy and attacking intent, showing glimpses of the football De Zerbi wants to implement. However, they struggled to seriously test Jordan Pickford. Jan Paul van Hecke and Mateus Fernandes both had opportunities in the opening half but failed to make them count.
Everton created the clearer chances as the match progressed, forcing Antonin Kinsky into several important saves. The goalkeeper was also required to recover after giving the ball away directly to Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall in the second half. Former Tottenham forward Brennan Johnson also missed a good opportunity by firing over.
Tottenham pushed forward late in the game but could not find the breakthrough. The result means Spurs remain without a Premier League goal or victory this season. Remarkably, it is the first time in the club’s history that they have failed to score in each of their opening four league matches.
Spurs Player Ratings
Antonin Kinsky – 7/10
Produced a solid display, making important saves from Garner and Barry before recovering from his own mistake to deny Dewsbury-Hall. Looked composed when called upon.
Jan Paul van Hecke – 7/10
Showed confidence on the ball and played some useful passes between the lines. Had a good opportunity himself and later moved to right-back. Defended well throughout.
Micky van de Ven – 8/10
Another commanding performance from the captain. Rarely looked troubled and kept Everton’s attackers under control down his side.
Andy Robertson – 8/10
Delivered a dangerous free-kick for Van Hecke and provided several quality crosses. Defensively reliable and offered plenty of experience on the flank.
Rodrigo Bentancur – 8/10
Put in another energetic all-round performance before being withdrawn after the hour mark, likely with the upcoming Liverpool fixture in mind.
Sandro Tonali – 7/10
Looked increasingly sharp and produced several impressive diagonal passes. Spurs were generally effective in the build-up, but lacked quality in the final third.
Savio – 5/10
His early dribbling lifted the crowd, but he often moved inside from the right when staying wider could have been more effective. Needs to improve his decision-making after beating defenders.
Mateus Fernandes – 5/10
Played between the attacking midfield role and supporting Gray during the first half. Had an effort blocked and missed a good chance when he could have shot first time. Faded after the break.
Omar Marmoush – 5/10
Showed a few promising flashes but never managed to seriously influence the game or produce the decisive moment Spurs needed.
Dominic Solanke – 4/10
Looked understandably short of sharpness after such a long absence from the Premier League starting XI. His touch was rusty and he struggled to hold the ball up effectively.
Substitutes
Mathys Tel – 5/10
Beat his marker on occasions but lacked the end product needed to turn those moments into opportunities. De Zerbi appeared to speak to him about this after the match.
Lucas Bergvall – 6/10
Tested Pickford with a low curling effort that the goalkeeper turned around the post. Worked hard and tried to create something late on.
Mohammed Kudus – 5/10
Had a few positive moments but ultimately struggled to find a way through Everton’s defence.
James Maddison – 5/10
Returned for the final stages but could not make the difference. Still appears to be getting back up to speed after his lengthy spell out.
