Tottenham ‘Eye Surprise Swoop for Free-Agent Forward’ — With One Big Catch

Tottenham are considering a swoop for free agent Mauro Icardi, who has been without a club since leaving Galatasaray over the summer. The Argentine striker, who spent four years in Turkey, is reportedly open to a new challenge — though Spurs couldn’t register him until the January window opens.

The interest comes as Spurs continue hunting for their first league goal of the season, an unprecedented drought that has left them without a goal in four straight Premier League matches for the first time in club history. Roberto De Zerbi’s side have two draws and two losses — against Brentford and Newcastle — shipping eight goals and dropping to 17th, with a Carabao Cup exit via a 3-1 loss to Liverpool adding to the misery.

Italian outlet Cronache di Spogliatoio (via The Sun) reports Tottenham are eyeing Icardi as a solution, noting the former Inter, PSG, and Galatasaray forward has never featured in the Premier League. Journalist Nahuel Ferreira also reported that Olympiacos entered formal discussions with Icardi last week, though his reported £8.6 million annual salary is said to exceed what the Greek club can afford.

Having already committed roughly £100m for Tonali and £85m for Fernandes this summer, a free signing like Icardi would give Tottenham experienced firepower without further straining their transfer budget. The club also brought in Omar Marmoush on loan (with an obligation to buy worth £60m) and winger Savio for £85m, though Marmoush hasn’t yet found the net for Spurs, and Dominic Solanke has managed just one goal in six appearances leading the line.

Richarlison remains out of the picture entirely, unused since the opening-day 3-0 loss to Brentford, and expected to stay sidelined until at least January following a breakdown in his relationship with the club and failed transfer attempts to Trabzonspor and Vasco da Gama. De Zerbi, addressing the goal drought, said he’d faced similarly tough circumstances on arrival last season and remains realistic rather than optimistic, stressing that team improvement isn’t instant. He pointed to performances against Everton and Nottingham as signs of progress in team play and player attitude despite the lack of results, urging patience and continued hard work. Any Icardi deal would have to wait for the January registration window regardl
