Former Liverpool striker Michael Owen has warned Liverpool F.C. head coach Andoni Iraola that the club has a major problem at both full-back positions.
Owen believes Liverpool have struggled to replace Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson, who previously gave the team significant attacking and defensive quality from the two flanks. He described the current situation as a major change from the period when the pair were established starters.
Right-back concerns
Owen said he likes Conor Bradley, but believes his injury record makes it difficult for Liverpool to rely on him consistently.
He also questioned Jeremie Frimpong, arguing that the Dutchman looks more naturally suited to an advanced attacking role than to defending as a traditional full-back. Liverpool have consequently used Ronald Araújo at right-back in some recent matches.
Left-back concerns
Owen’s biggest concern on the left is Milos Kerkez, who joined Liverpool from Bournemouth for a reported £40 million in 2025 and had previously worked with Iraola.
Owen believes Kerkez has struggled to reproduce his previous form at Liverpool and questioned whether he can establish himself as the club’s long-term solution. He also criticised Kostas Tsimikas, saying he does not believe the Greek can be relied upon as a regular starter.
Why the issue matters
Liverpool previously had a settled combination in Alexander-Arnold and Robertson, with both contributing heavily to the team’s attacking output as well as their defensive responsibilities. Owen’s argument is that the club has not yet found comparable long-term solutions on either side.
There is also a wider debate about whether Liverpool should recruit another full-back. One report suggests a new left-back could become a priority, particularly if Kerkez and Tsimikas continue to struggle.
In short: Owen’s two positions are right-back and left-back. His comments focus on Bradley’s availability, Frimpong’s defensive suitability, Tsimikas’ level and Kerkez’s difficult start at Liverpool. These are Owen’s assessments, rather than an official announcement that Iraola has decided to buy replacements.
