Alisson Becker reportedly edged remarkably close to a Liverpool exit this summer, with the Brazilian said to have already settled on a shirt number at Juventus before Liverpool stepped in to halt the move.
Three months ago, the 33-year-old was strongly linked with a switch to Turin and was reportedly genuinely tempted by the chance to join the Bianconeri. The deal ultimately fell through, though Juventus are said to be weighing up a return for the goalkeeper in 2027, when his current contract expires and he could be free to leave without a fee.
Juventus later shifted their focus to Emiliano Martinez, but that pursuit also broke down, eventually leading them to strike an agreement with Tottenham for Guglielmo Vicario, per The Athletic.
Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio has since shed light on how close Alisson came to leaving Anfield. Speaking on the Caffè Di Marzio podcast, he explained that Juventus had made the shot-stopper their top target, with personal terms already agreed and a shirt number picked out. Liverpool, though, chose to hold onto their number one goalkeeper despite continued pressure from the Italian side, prompting Juventus to redirect their pursuit toward Martinez.
There had been real unease earlier in the summer that Alisson might follow other long-serving figures like Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson out of Anfield. Liverpool managed to resist Juventus’ advances this time, but the picture could look different next year, with his deal running only until June 2027.
Alisson remains one of the few remaining figures from the peak of the Jurgen Klopp era and continues to be a crucial presence for the Reds. While Andoni Iraola has alternative options between the posts, none currently match Alisson’s command, calmness, and knack for organising the backline.
Liverpool will inevitably have to start planning for the post-Alisson era at some stage, and that reckoning may come around sooner than fans would like. For now, though, supporters can breathe easy knowing Juventus failed to lure their goalkeeper away this summer.
