With Alisson Becker entering the final year of his Liverpool contract, a big decision on his future isn’t far off.
The goalkeeper, who turns 34 in early October, has just over nine months left on a deal worth £250,000 a week (Capology). He was linked with a move to Juventus earlier this year, a rumour that thankfully came to nothing, but as things stand, overseas clubs can approach him about a pre-contract agreement from January.
No talks yet over a new deal
On The Athletic’s Walk On podcast, James Pearce revealed that no negotiations have taken place over an extension, with all sides feeling it’s “too soon” to start. Of Liverpool’s number 1, he said: “Is he going to still be around next season? We don’t know that at the moment. From what I’ve been told, it’s just too soon on all sides. There’s not been those talks yet.”
Fans could do without another saga
Neither Alisson nor Liverpool seem to be panicking, and nine months should in theory be plenty of time to agree an extension beyond next summer. Still, after several contract sagas in recent years, many of which dragged into the final weeks of the season, Reds fans would rather not be left waiting again over the future of the 33-year-old.
Alisson showed his world-class quality once more on Sunday, producing a superb reflex save to deny Evanilson in the first half of the 1-0 win at Bournemouth. Losing him on a free transfer next year would be a major blow.
Pearce’s update suggests white smoke on the contract front isn’t imminent, and it’s not out of the question that the keeper could choose a change of scenery in 2027 after nine years on Merseyside.
Hopefully talks get going soon and an extension is agreed before January, so the second half of the season isn’t played out under a cloud of uncertainty.
