Ethan Ampadu Lauds Tottenham “Maniac” Rodrigo Bentancur After Fiercely Contested Leeds United Draw

Leeds United skipper Ethan Ampadu paid warm tribute to Tottenham midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur following the sides’ dramatic 1-1 Premier League draw, labelling the Uruguayan a “maniac” in acknowledgement of the ferocious intensity and aggression he carries into midfield battles.

The two clubs played out a gripping stalemate at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Monday night, a result that leaves Spurs still scrambling to preserve their top-flight status in the closing stages of the campaign.

Although much of the post-match discourse centred on Mathys Tel’s costly penalty concession against Ampadu himself, the Leeds captain also made a point of recognising Bentancur’s influence in the centre of the park.

In a post-match interview, Ampadu reportedly acknowledged that coming up against Bentancur ranks among the most demanding individual contests in the Premier League, owing to the Spurs man’s relentless work rate and sharp footballing intelligence.

“It’s scary what he does sometimes,” Ampadu said. “He never stops running, he presses constantly, and even when you think you’ve escaped him, he’s back again. He plays like a total maniac in midfield, but in a good way.”

The Leeds skipper also highlighted Bentancur’s ability to remain composed when under pressure, suggesting the former Juventus man remains one of the most underappreciated figures in the Tottenham squad, often overshadowed by the club’s more prominent attacking talents.

Bentancur has quietly established himself as one of Spurs’ most influential players since his arrival from Juventus in January 2022, earning widespread respect for his versatility, tactical intelligence, ability to drive play forward and knack for dictating the tempo of matches.

Having battled through significant injury disruption over the past two seasons, the Uruguayan international has steadily recaptured his best form under De Zerbi and emerged as a central figure in Tottenham’s relegation survival push this term.

During Monday’s contest, Bentancur was prominent in Spurs’ midfield structure before being withdrawn in the second half, with his combativeness in duels and capacity to disrupt Leeds’ counter-attacking play causing repeated problems — something Ampadu experienced directly.

Tottenham fans took to social media swiftly in response to Ampadu’s remarks, with widespread agreement that Bentancur is consistently undervalued relative to some of the club’s more celebrated names.

As Spurs head into a pivotal run of fixtures, De Zerbi will be eager for Bentancur to remain fit and continue marshalling the midfield as the North London club looks to steer clear of what would be a catastrophic relegation.
