Tottenham Hotspur have received a significant boost in their pursuit of Sandro Tonali after fresh reports suggested one of the Premier League’s biggest clubs has no intention of entering the race for the Newcastle United midfielder, leaving Spurs in a strong position to push ahead with their ambitious plans.
Roberto De Zerbi has made strengthening the heart of his midfield one of his top priorities this summer, and Tottenham are prepared to shatter their transfer record once again in an attempt to secure the Italian international. The North London club have already demonstrated their willingness to spend heavily following the arrival of Mateus Fernandes, but their recruitment drive is far from over.
While recent speculation indicated that Manchester City could rival Spurs with a substantial offer, sources close to the situation insist Tottenham remain confident they can win the race for Tonali. Their optimism has only grown after reports dismissed claims that another English heavyweight was preparing a dramatic late intervention.
According to fresh information, the club in question has no plans to pursue Tonali despite having the financial resources to compete for virtually any player on the market. Sources close to the club have reportedly moved quickly to play down the rumours, making clear that the Newcastle midfielder isn’t currently on their list of priority targets.
Much of that stems from Newcastle’s reported £100 million valuation. Officials there are said to view that fee as poor value, particularly with the club’s transfer focus currently aimed at reinforcing other parts of the squad rather than bringing in another central midfielder.
That stance could shift later in the window if departures open up a need elsewhere, but for now there’s no sign they intend to challenge Tottenham for Tonali.
That leaves Spurs increasingly well placed as they gear up for another major push to get Newcastle to sell. Reports suggest Tottenham are ready to table an improved bid worth around £100 million in an effort to strike a deal with the Magpies.
Alongside the sizeable fee, De Zerbi’s side are also said to be ready to hand Tonali a bumper contract worth around £250,000 a week, a clear sign of how determined they are to bring the former AC Milan man to North London.
With rival interest looking less intense than first feared and Tottenham prepared to back De Zerbi with a record-breaking package, the race for Tonali appears to be swinging in Spurs’ favour as their aggressive summer rebuild continues.
