Forget Rafael Leao and Cody Gakpo — Spurs urged to save millions by turning to their own “English Neymar” instead

Tottenham Hotspur’s era of Heung-min Son and Gareth Bale tearing apart Premier League defenses from wide areas feels like a bygone period. The club has since struggled to recapture that attacking edge, going through back-to-back seasons fighting to avoid the drop.

Under Roberto De Zerbi, though, there’s renewed hope. Spurs have already made a bold move in the market, committing £185 million combined for Mateus Fernandes and Sandro Tonali, and they’re now eyeing further investment to boost their attack.

Chasing attacking reinforcements

Bournemouth’s Eli Junior Kroupi sits high on Tottenham’s wishlist, though his roughly £90 million price tag is a significant hurdle. Still, he’s not the club’s only option.

With defensive and midfield business largely wrapped up, Spurs are now focused on landing a genuine attacking spearhead for De Zerbi’s evolving squad. Kroupi, just 19, is seen as one of the continent’s top young talents after netting 13 Premier League goals, and his versatility across center-forward, wing, or second-striker roles adds to his appeal.

If Bournemouth won’t budge on price, Tottenham have backup options. AC Milan’s Rafael Leao is still very much in the picture, with talks reportedly already underway with his camp — the Portuguese winger is said to want out of Milan, which could help Spurs negotiate a lower fee. Liverpool’s Cody Gakpo is also admired by the club, though pulling him from Anfield won’t be easy given his role there, even if growing competition for places, notably from breakout talent Rio Ngumoha, could shift his outlook. Manchester City’s Savinho and Omar Marmoush have been mentioned too, but they’re seen as less compelling than Leao or Gakpo.

Could the answer already be at the club?

Even with funds available, Tottenham might not need a marquee signing if they trust their existing squad more. Boosting the attack is still a priority, though, after a weak scoring return last term — notably, only Richarlison outscored defensive players like Joao Palhinha, Micky van de Ven, and Cristian Romero, highlighting how badly the team needs more consistent goal output.

Whether Spurs go big for Leao, Gakpo, Kroupi, or lean on internal options, adding more cutting edge up front will be key to sustaining their progress under De Zerbi.

Out wide, Leao and Gakpo would be excellent additions — Leao has averaged 13 goals a season over the past five years, while Gakpo hit 18 goals across all competitions as Liverpool won the 2024/25 title. Their value isn’t just about goals, either; both bring pace, directness, and the ability to beat defenders one-on-one. But De Zerbi may already have a similar profile on his books in Mikey Moore.

Moore burst onto the scene under Ange Postecoglou in summer 2024, scoring against Hearts and assisting in a preseason friendly against QPR. He went on to make 19 first-team appearances in 2024/25, contributing a goal and two assists. The numbers may look modest, but his ability has never been questioned — scouts and teammates alike have compared his fearless, direct style to Neymar, including a notable nod from James Maddison.

Like Leao and Gakpo, Moore can play wide or centrally, and his pace, control, and willingness to attack defenders make him one of Spurs’ most promising young forwards. His loan spell at Rangers boosted his profile further, with seven goals and four assists, and a standout dribbling rate of 2.12 successful take-ons per 90 in the Scottish Premiership — well above Leao’s 1.26 and Gakpo’s 1.11 in the same window.

Regarded as one of the academy’s best products in years, Moore already has a scoring pedigree, netting 19 goals in 24 games for the Under-18s before stepping up. Another loan is expected for 2026/27, but Tottenham could change course if De Zerbi feels he’s ready to contribute now — potentially giving the club a cheaper, homegrown alternative to spending big on the wings.
