Cristian Romero’s Tottenham chapter could be nearing its end, with new reports indicating the club have put their captain forward to one of Europe’s heavyweight sides as they continue reshaping the squad.
Romero himself is currently locked in on helping Argentina defend their World Cup title, but talks over where he’ll play his club football next are said to be building momentum in the background.
Spurs have already overhauled their central defence this summer, bringing in Jan Paul van Hecke and Marcos Senesi as Luka Vušković and Radu Drăgușin both exited the club. That reshuffle has only added to talk that another senior defender could be next to leave.
Fabrizio Romano reports that Inter Milan opened talks with Tottenham over full-back Djed Spence, and during those discussions Spurs put Romero’s name on the table as well. Inter are said to rate the Argentine highly, but Tottenham’s asking price is understood to sit well above what the Italian club are willing to spend, making his valuation the main sticking point.
Barcelona are also keeping tabs on the situation as they look to bolster their defence, which could give Romero more than one elite suitor if Spurs choose to sell.
His World Cup form has only added to the growing interest — showing once again why he’s rated among the best defenders in the world, and catching the eye of clubs looking to strengthen at the back. Tottenham reportedly see this summer as the prime moment to cash in on his value, with the World Cup serving as the ultimate shop window for him against top-level opposition.
Other reports suggest Spain would be Romero’s preferred next step if he does leave, which could open the door to La Liga suitors.
As Roberto De Zerbi continues rebuilding the Spurs backline and Europe’s top clubs monitor developments, the next few weeks may decide whether Romero stays in North London or departs in one of the summer’s biggest moves.
