Barcelona are reportedly renewing their pursuit of Tottenham Hotspur skipper Cristian Romero, with fresh claims suggesting the Spanish giants are giving the move serious thought. Inter Milan are also keen on the Argentine centre-back, which could spark a heated bidding war before the transfer window shuts.
Spurs already bolstered their backline early in the window by bringing in Jan Paul van Hecke and Marcos Senesi, handing Roberto De Zerbi more options as he rebuilds his squad for the upcoming season.
There has also been outgoing activity at the back. Luka Vuskovic moved to Brighton in a deal worth a reported £50 million, and Radu Dragusin joined Fiorentina on loan under terms that could net Tottenham roughly £21.4 million in 2027.
Even after those moves, further defensive shake-ups may be coming. According to reports from Europe, Barcelona’s long-standing admiration for Romero has resurfaced. The 28-year-old is currently on World Cup duty with Argentina, but talk over his club future shows no sign of slowing.
The latest word is that Romero himself is open to leaving Tottenham this summer, adding another layer to one of the window’s most closely watched sagas.
Barcelona won’t have it easy, though. Inter Milan, the reigning Serie A champions, are still very much in the picture, with Fabrizio Romano reporting that the club have earmarked both Romero and Djed Spence as possible signings. With several top clubs circling, Spurs could end up in a strong position if Barcelona and Inter both push forward with formal offers.
Tottenham are said to be willing to let Romero go if a fee of around €50 million (£42.6 million) is met, meaning the next few weeks could decide whether the captain’s spell in North London is nearing its end.
