The Cody Gakpo transfer saga has taken another twist, with Fabrizio Romano insisting a move to north London is still very much alive despite reports the deal might be falling apart.
Tottenham have already shown real intent this summer, moving quickly to build a stronger squad for Roberto De Zerbi. Six signings are already in the bag, but Spurs aren’t done yet, with attention now turning to adding more punch up front. After a torrid campaign that saw them battle relegation right until the final day, there’s little appetite for another rocky season — which seems to be driving the club’s continued push for big attacking names, with Manchester City’s Savinho and Liverpool’s Gakpo both high on the list.
Doubt crept in, though, after journalist Alex Crook suggested the Gakpo deal might not get done before deadline day. Crook claimed Liverpool sources feel the forward has had a strong pre-season under Andoni Iraola and see him as part of their plans going forward. While Gakpo himself might fancy the move, Crook said there was little sign Liverpool were ready to sanction a sale — seemingly bad news for Spurs.
Then Romano weighed in. He says Tottenham haven’t backed away and there’s been no breakdown in talks — conversations between the two clubs remain live, and Gakpo is still open to the switch. Crucially, Romano added that personal terms aren’t an issue, which would be a big step if accurate.
With the player reportedly willing, the real hurdle becomes agreeing a fee — and that’s where things get complicated. Romano notes Liverpool would need to reshuffle their forward options if Gakpo left, with the Reds ready to bring in two wingers, including top target Bradley Barcola, to cover his exit. In other words, this could turn into a domino effect involving several clubs and players.
For Tottenham fans who feared the move was dead, Romano’s update will come as a relief. With the window closing fast, time is tight, and Spurs can’t afford to sit on their hands if Gakpo remains a genuine priority. Landing him would be a major coup — his versatility and top-level experience across the front line would give De Zerbi real attacking depth, something Tottenham badly need.
The key question now is whether Spurs can get Liverpool to name a price and then actually meet it. For now, though, Romano’s message is simple: this deal isn’t dead. Talks are ongoing, Gakpo’s open to it, and with less than two weeks left in the window, this could still build to a dramatic conclusion — potentially turning into one of the biggest attacking deals of Tottenham’s summer.
