Liverpool returned to winning form on Wednesday night, edging Sunderland 1-0 to boost their push for a Champions League spot next season. While Regis Le Bris’ side have exceeded expectations this term, the reigning Premier League champions ended the Black Cats’ unbeaten home streak.
After building sustained pressure late in the first half, largely inspired by Florian Wirtz’s clever play, Liverpool finally broke through shortly after the hour. Captain Virgil van Dijk rose highest from a corner to head home, becoming the club’s highest-scoring defender in the competition’s history. Sunderland responded positively and carved out opportunities, but Arne Slot’s men stood firm to move within three points of fourth-placed Manchester United.
There were several impressive performances on the night, including from Wirtz, yet much of the praise centred on a player who looked back to his “world-class” best.
Konate Impresses in Defensive Battle
Speaking on TNT Sports, Ally McCoist pointed to the physical contest between Brian Brobbey and Ibrahima Konate as a crucial early duel. Konate ultimately dominated the battle, producing a series of strong challenges to neutralise Sunderland’s threat, particularly given Brobbey’s reputation for decisive goals this season.
Konate finished with nine defensive actions, including four clearances, a block and a key interception. The French defender—previously criticised amid speculation linking him with Real Madrid—also won all three of his ground duels and four of five aerial contests. Fans were quick to praise his display online, with many suggesting he is finally returning to top form and describing his performance as “unbelievable” and “monstrous.”
Uncertainty Over Konate’s Future
At their best, Konate and Van Dijk have formed a formidable partnership at the heart of Liverpool’s defence, and the 26-year-old has long been viewed as a natural successor. However, with his contract set to expire in June and talks reportedly at a standstill, there is growing concern he could leave on a free transfer.
Speculation persists that he may be eyeing a move to Real Madrid, especially amid reports linking Jurgen Klopp with a role at the Bernabeu and suggestions the Spanish giants are targeting defensive reinforcements.
Liverpool, meanwhile, appear to be planning ahead. The club have reportedly agreed a £60 million deal for highly rated 20-year-old Jeremy Jacquet ahead of the summer window, after previously securing Giovanni Leoni before the 2025/26 season.
