Journalist gives fresh insight into what’s next for Liverpool’s Federico Chiesa

Federico Chiesa’s long-term prospects at Liverpool are being questioned again, with reports out of Italy suggesting a January return to Serie A is now a real possibility.

The 28-year-old has never quite settled into a rhythm on Merseyside since arriving from Juventus back in 2024, with injuries constantly interrupting any progress. His standing under Andoni Iraola has taken a further hit after being left out of the club’s Champions League squad altogether.

According to Italian journalist Emanuele Cammaroto, speaking on Radio Punto Zero, there are growing indications that Chiesa could be on his way back to Italy, with January identified as a realistic window given his desire for regular football — and Napoli reportedly among the clubs who could be approached.

Napoli’s interest would make sense if Chiesa concludes that first-team opportunities at Liverpool simply aren’t coming. His path has only gotten more crowded since the summer, with Bradley Barcola and Victor Muñoz bringing extra depth to the wide positions, and Cody Gakpo staying put after his move to Manchester City fell through. Being left off Liverpool’s Champions League list — alongside Wataru Endo, as confirmed by Sky Sport Italia — only reinforced the sense that he’s slipping down the pecking order.

A January exit is starting to look like the sensible outcome for everyone involved. Chiesa still has plenty to offer in terms of quality and game-changing ability, but at this stage of his career he needs consistent minutes that Liverpool can’t promise him. For Napoli, he’d represent an experienced option in Serie A without the price tag of a younger signing, while Liverpool would trim their wage bill and open up a squad spot.

That said, nothing is set in stone — Chiesa’s father recently maintained that his son is happy at Anfield. Being content there, though, doesn’t necessarily solve the issue of game time.
