Tottenham Hotspur moved out of the relegation zone after securing a crucial 2-1 win against Aston Villa at Villa Park, with Villa manager Unai Emery openly praising one Spurs player following the match.
First-half goals from Conor Gallagher and Richarlison put Tottenham in control, before Emiliano Buendía netted a late consolation in stoppage time for the hosts.
Although Spurs delivered a well-rounded team performance, it was Gallagher who stood out with an energetic and commanding display in midfield that Aston Villa found difficult to contain. The England international opened the scoring within the opening 12 minutes with a fine effort from the edge of the box and went on to dictate play alongside João Palhinha and Rodrigo Bentancur.
Speaking after the game, Emery reportedly singled out Gallagher’s impact, admitting the midfielder caused persistent problems throughout.
“He is a nightmare to play against,” Emery said. “His intensity, pressing, and hunger for second balls completely transform Tottenham. When he performs with that level of energy, they become a very different side.”
The Villa boss was particularly impressed with Gallagher’s work rate, both defensively and offensively, as he recorded more defensive actions than any other player on the pitch.
Tottenham’s high pressing game disrupted Villa’s rhythm for much of the contest, with Gallagher central to their approach. His drive set the tempo early, while Palhinha’s physical presence ensured Spurs maintained control in midfield.
Emery also acknowledged the effectiveness of Tottenham’s midfield balance, noting his team struggled to handle the trio’s movement and aggression.
Despite spells of possession, Villa created few clear chances, with Micky van de Ven and Kevin Danso delivering solid defensive performances.
In attack, Mathys Tel impressed on his return to the starting lineup, setting up Richarlison’s goal with a dangerous cross, while Randal Kolo Muani posed a constant threat with his pace and direct runs.
However, it was Gallagher who remained the standout figure, driving Tottenham to victory with a tireless display.
The win lifts Spurs out of the bottom three and provides a significant boost ahead of the final stretch of the season, with Gallagher emerging as a key figure in their fight for survival.
