De Zerbi Praises Gallagher as Tottenham Secure Crucial Victory Over Aston Villa
Tottenham Hotspur manager Roberto De Zerbi lauded Conor Gallagher following an influential display that inspired Spurs to a vital 2–1 Premier League victory over Aston Villa F.C. at Villa Park.
Heading into the encounter under significant pressure, Tottenham capitalised on results elsewhere—including West Ham United F.C.’s defeat to Brentford F.C.—to climb out of the relegation zone with one of their most assured performances of the season.
Gallagher set the tone early, opening the scoring with a superb long-range effort—his first goal since joining from Atlético Madrid during the January transfer window. Richarlison soon extended Tottenham’s lead with a composed header, leaving the hosts trailing by two goals within the opening half hour.
Although Emiliano Buendía netted late in stoppage time, it proved to be only a consolation as Spurs held firm to secure consecutive league victories for the first time since August.
Speaking after the match, De Zerbi highlighted Gallagher’s all-round contribution, suggesting the midfielder’s presence elevates the entire team.
“When Gallagher performs at that level, it feels as though we have an extra player on the pitch,” he said. “He contributes in every phase—defensively, offensively, and in transition. His energy and quality make a significant difference.”
The Italian coach also expressed satisfaction with his side’s overall performance, emphasising their balance both in and out of possession against a strong opponent.
“Aston Villa are a top team, and facing Unai Emery here is always a challenge,” De Zerbi added. “But we showed discipline without the ball and quality with it. That was particularly pleasing.”
Despite the positive result lifting Tottenham above the relegation zone, De Zerbi urged his squad to maintain focus and consistency in the closing stages of the season.
Villa manager Emery, meanwhile, defended his decision to rotate his squad ahead of a crucial European fixture, maintaining confidence in his players despite the setback.
“When we win with rotation, it is accepted. When we lose, it is questioned,” Emery said. “I trust my squad and stand by my decisions. My responsibility is always to act in the best interests of the team.”
The result provides Tottenham with a significant boost in both momentum and belief, as Gallagher’s standout performance helps reignite their survival hopes.
