Liverpool F.C. made the trip to Old Trafford to face Manchester United F.C., hoping to claim a valuable away result in the Premier League.
Despite a determined comeback, the visitors were edged out 3–2 in a thrilling contest.
The match began disastrously for Liverpool, as Matheus Cunha fired United ahead just six minutes in, his effort taking a deflection on its way past goal. Things quickly worsened when Benjamin Sesko doubled the lead in the 14th minute, leaving Arne Slot’s side chasing the game early. Liverpool struggled to contain United’s attacking tempo and went into halftime trailing 2–0.
After the break, Liverpool responded with renewed intensity. Dominik Szoboszlai pulled one back just two minutes into the second half, sparking belief. That momentum continued as Cody Gakpo levelled the score in the 56th minute, completing an impressive recovery from two goals down and putting Liverpool firmly back in contention.
However, the decisive blow came in the 77th minute when Kobbie Mainoo restored Manchester United’s lead. Liverpool pushed for another equaliser but were unable to find a breakthrough before full-time, leaving them frustrated after a spirited effort.
In terms of individual displays, Liverpool’s goalkeeper endured a mixed outing—producing one notable save but conceding three times. Curtis Jones delivered a solid performance at right-back, contributing both defensively and in attack. In central defence, Ibrahima Konaté looked uncertain, while captain Virgil van Dijk struggled to organise the backline effectively.
On the left, Andy Robertson showed energy but lacked precision in key moments. Midfield saw Ryan Gravenberch impress with his all-round contribution, while Alexis Mac Allister linked play well without directly influencing the score.
Out wide, Jeremie Frimpong was tidy but lacked a decisive edge, while Florian Wirtz showed flashes of quality without converting them into goals. Szoboszlai stood out as Liverpool’s best performer, scoring and creating chances, while Gakpo’s equaliser highlighted his threat up front.
Substitute Milos Kerkez also made a positive impact late on, fashioning a promising opportunity despite limited minutes on the pitch.
