Liverpool defeat Crystal Palace 3–1 to boost their top-five ambitions

Liverpool FC strengthened their bid for a top-four finish with a convincing 3–1 victory over Crystal Palace at Anfield, combining sharp finishing with resilience under pressure.

At this decisive stage of the season, points are all that matter, and this win keeps Liverpool firmly on track for Champions League qualification.

Alexander Isak set the tone early, continuing his adaptation to life at the club following his high-profile move. His opening goal gave Liverpool both confidence and control as they settled into the game.

Andy Robertson later added a second, before Palace briefly reignited tension with a late push. However, Florian Wirtz sealed the result in stoppage time, ensuring there was no dramatic finish.

Isak’s goal carried added importance, coming at a time when expectations were building around him. His finish—slightly fortunate after a deflection before beating Dean Henderson—showed his awareness and positioning. It was also his first Premier League goal at Anfield for Liverpool, a moment warmly received by the home crowd.

Liverpool were also forced to navigate an unexpected situation in goal, with injuries to Alisson Becker and Giorgi Mamardashvili handing Freddie Woodman his league debut. Under pressure, he responded well, producing a key save to deny Jean-Philippe Mateta at a crucial moment.

That stop proved vital, allowing Liverpool to break forward and score through Robertson, who finished calmly after good work involving Curtis Jones.

Crystal Palace, though, remained competitive throughout. Their persistence paid off when Daniel Muñoz scored from distance to reduce the deficit and shift momentum. They continued to threaten, with Jørgen Strand Larsen striking the post late on and Brennan Johnson also missing a clear chance.

As stoppage time approached, Liverpool regained control, and Wirtz finished neatly from inside the box to wrap up the points and cap a strong individual display.

There was, however, concern after Mohamed Salah was forced off in the second half, adding uncertainty as his time at the club nears its expected end.

The result moves Liverpool eight points clear of sixth-placed Brighton, reinforcing their hold on a Champions League spot. With four matches remaining, they are in a strong position—provided they maintain consistency and composure to the end of the season.
